Christian Guttmann talks about AI and wanting to understand intelligence enough to recreate it.
Christian discusses building systems that can interact with humans beyond regular computer interfaces.
He started working with computers early, too early for advanced AI. He studied broadly, including philosophy, ethics as well as synthetic and biological neural networks.

What first got you passionate about robotics and what most excites you know?
I build several small robots with some intelligence in the 90ies, got to know the work of Rodney Brooks (previous Director of the MIT Media leb, and a total icon in the world of AI and robotics), and then got very passionate in the RoboCup games, where I build teams of four legged robotic teams that collaborated to play soccer against another robotic team, completely autonomously. For this research work, I received an annual award by the Swedish society which I was trememdously proud of!
What's the biggest misconception people have about robots? What's surprised you?
There are so many, one of the most annoying misconceptions is that people actually talk of "Robotic Process Automation" and somehow mix this up with robots. Robots are physical and are not software.
What advice would you give to your younger self or someone getting into the field now?
Stay true to the enormously broad impact of AI to society and industry, dont get distracted with buzzwords that misconstrue the real idea of AI.
Where will we see robots in 15 years and what do we need to do to get there?
More robots will be part of our lifes, in shopping stores within the next 2-3 years, within health care sector e.g. with playing with and educating children within 6-10 years. We need investment, and continue to build and attract excellent talent.
What would you like your legacy to be?
Being known to be a person that made a huge positive impact to the human condition with the help of Artificial Intelligence. Empowering people, governments and industry to utilise AI. Contributing to building an AI that reaches human level intelligence and beyond.
